A man wielding a gun and possibly carrying an explosive device is holed up at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, MD -- and now he's been identified by the network as radical environmentalist -- James Jay Lee -- who has had a grudge against Discovery for years.

FAST-RISING Jamaican sprinter, Yohan Blake, turned back former world record holder, Justin Gatlin, to win the men's 100 metres at the Palio Citta della Quercia EA Permit Meet in Roverto, Italy, yesterday.

Blake, one of six Jamaicans who have gone under 10 seconds, got his first win of the season as he clocked 10.06 seconds to get the better of Gatlin, who clocked a season-best 10.09.

Italian Emmanuele Gregorio took third in 10.28, with Blake training partner, Marvin Anderson, finishing fourth in 10.48 seconds.

Gatlin maintained his focus despite two false starts, which disqualified two runners - Ryan Bailey of the United States and Fabio Cerutti of Italy.

This was the first defeat this season for Gatlin, who is making a comeback after missing the sport for four years due to a doping violation. The time was also the American's best since his comeback. He previously ran 10.17 three weeks ago.

"It was a good practice for me and I bettered my time as well," Gatlin said. "I tweaked my quad just a little bit coming into home and had to slow a little bit but all in all it was a good race, going against good competitors."

Gatlin added that he hopes to go under 10 seconds at his next meet in Padua on Friday.

Two Jamaicans claimed top spots in the men's 'B' 100 metres. Former Camperdown High outstanding athlete, Remaldo Rose, who is making a comeback after injury, clocked 10.46 seconds to win by one hunderedths of a second over Ramone McKenzie, who clocked 10.47 seconds for second. Jacques Riparelli of Italy took third in 10.55 seconds.

Third place

Jamaica's Allodin Fothergill clocked 46.04 seconds to place third in the men's 400 metres, which was won by homeboy Marco Vistalli, who clocked 45.77 seconds. The United States David Neville took second in 45.91 seconds. Jamaica's Oral Thompson had a seventh-place finish in the event in 46.84 seconds.

Following her second-place finish in the women's 100 metres last year, Trinidad and Tobago's Kellyann Baptiste went one better this year, clocking 11.13 seconds for the win, though running in a positive wind of 6.70 metres per second.

The United States' Mikele Barber was second in 11.17 seconds, as Jamaica's Aileen Bailey ended fourth in 11.29 seconds.

Meanwhile, world champion Caster Semenya finished a surprising ninth in the 800 metres.

In her fifth race following an 11-month gender dispute, Semenya clocked a dismal two minutes, 7.16 seconds.

Elisa Cusma Piccione of Italy, who openly questioned Semenya's gender at last year's Worlds in Berlin, won in 2:00.37.

It is Semenya's second consecutive loss after she placed third at the Diamond League meet in Brussels on Friday.

Despite the loss in Brussels, Semenya still clocked one minute, 59.66 seconds - the fastest time of her comeback. This time she was nowhere close to victory.

Semenya stood third to last after the first lap and never made a move to the front, giving the impression she was just out for a casual jog.

"Nothing happened. I ran the race, I ran slow. Nothing happened. It's part of the game," Semenya said. "Sometimes you need to go according to your body."

Afterwards, Semenya walked over to Cusma Piccione and congratulated the Italian.

FOUR-TERM PARLIAMENTARIAN Roger Clarke told The Gleaner Monday he may quit representational politics sooner than anticipated as a result of the fatal accident in which he was involved last week.

Clarke, who represents the Central Westmoreland constituency, said he has lost his appetite for food and has been having difficulty sleeping since the collision in St Catherine which killed one man.

"If I found myself in a situation where this would cause me not to be able to carry out my duties in terms of representation and looking after their (constituents') welfare, I would go. I do think about that. I am human," Clarke said.

Clarke, who turns 70 this year, is into his first term as member of parliament for Central West-moreland. He had served three terms as MP in North East St Elizabeth.

Still in shock

Clarke disclosed that he was still in shock after the tragedy and revealed that demitting office was something he was pondering if his emotional state compromised his effectiveness as a political representative.

Since the accident, which claimed the life of 23-year-old Derron Nicholson, the People's National Party veteran said he was "really traumatised".

"I have had my driver's licence for 50 years and it is the first time that I have ever been in an accident," Clarke said.

He told The Gleaner that, despite not speaking to the relatives of Nicholson, he was profoundly sorry for what happened.

"I know how the relatives of the guy feels and I sympathise with them sincerely. If it was an ordinary accident, you would just say it is an accident, but when somebody has died, it does bring that level of trauma.

"I don't think the relatives are more traumatised than I am," Clarke said.

Police are still carrying out investigations to determine whether Clarke should be charged with manslaughter.

The former government minister, now opposition spokesman on agriculture, said he could "only hope for the best in terms of my own situation" and expressed his "profound sympathy to the the relatives of the deceased".

Said Clarke: "It is not just not being able to sleep. I have virtually lost my appetite. I have not been eating ... . You go to bed to sleep but you dream and you wonder.

"Sometimes I say, 'Oh my God, I wish it was a dream and I was waking up out of it'."

If Clarke is charged, he would be the second parliamentarian in nearly 20 years to be accused of death by dangerous driving.

In 1992, Errol Anderson, a former minister of national security, was charged with manslaughter but later acquitted. The charges against him had arisen from the deaths of two women along Seaview Road in Stony Hill, St Andrew.

Clarke would be hoping that he does not meet the fate of Anderson by being hauled before the courts.

In the meantime, he told The Gleaner that prayers and support from several persons have been his greatest comfort.

"What has given me strength is that I didn't know that so many people had such regard from me. I have gotten calls from every walk of life - from the highest to the lowest. Some people, when they try to call, they don't even have enough credit. Some call and pray with me on the phone," he said.

Clarke continued: "My wife is a deacon in the Baptist Church and they have also given me the kind of support that I need."

It may have been Prime Minister Bruce Golding hosting a fun day for the children of Tivoli Gardens, west Kingston, but the real rock star at the event was police Sergeant Nicholas Charlton.

Charlton moved effortlessly among the crowd of Tivoli Gardens residents, flanked by more than 10 children at a time, at the back-to-school treat and summer concert held yesterday at the Bumps basketball court in the community.

A request for the sergeant to be pulled away for a few minutes was unwelcome.

"We can have him back?" a child named Dwayne asked after a few minutes.

Abby, Tiana, Sharlotte, Shakur, Dwayne and Devaughn all lined up to make sure Charlton would find time for them at the back-to-school treat.

"A we friend and we father," Abby said, with a tight grip on the police officer's hand.

Charlton, a father of two children of his own, said the Tivoli Gardens children have grown attached to him over the past three months.

"They show great love to me," he said with a smile. "They also comply with me and I love the children."

Community-based policing

Since the west Kingston operation in May, many persons have expressed distrust towards politicians and the police.

However, Charlton is one of many officers at the Tivoli Gardens command post who carry out community-based policing every day.

Aside from carrying it out, Charlton, who reads with the children and helps them with spelling, said he believes in community policing.

"I believe it is the way to go, get to know the residents so they can trust you and you can correct them when they're wrong," he explained.

With approximately 3,000 people expected at the event, children age 6-12 had a Ferris wheel, swings, a rock-climbing interface and bounceabouts at their disposal.

Hands filled with drinks and cotton candy, the children were high on energy, running wild, laughing and holding hands.

But amid the laughter, there were indignant shouts from parents who wanted their toddlers and teenagers to be able to enjoy the fun day despite the age limit.

Protective mothers watched from a distance.

"Anything wha wrong wid me pickney, mi have the public defender phone number. You hear, Officer?"

And for those who didn't have the public defender's phone number, their voices called out to Sergeant 'Charlie' Charlton.

NEW YORK, USA — With the matter of his legal representation now settled, former Tivoli Gardens don and accused drug and weapons dealer Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is now involved in intense preparations for his upcoming trial here.

Steve Zissou, one of two high-profile attorneys representing Coke, told the Observer in a weekend interview that prosecutors are still providing the defence with material, despite the expiration of a court-ordered date for this to be done.

He said, however, that "there is nothing unusual about this", and that the defence team will be ready for Coke's next scheduled court appearance on September 7, although more material evidence is to be turned over to the defence.

Without elaborating, Zissou said that "there is likely to be dispute over some of the material".

He said that so far, there is nothing in the evidence provided — especially audio recordings — "that have any bearing on the allegations against Mr Coke".

This seems to have bolstered the defence's belief that they will be able to clear Coke.

"We will prevail at trial," Zissou told the Observer.

Except for motions of a schedule and the possible setting of a trial date, Zissou said he does not expect a great deal to happen during Coke's next court appearance.

Coke has been in custody here since June after being extradited on allegations of drugs and illegal weapons charges. Prosecutors here have maintained that "the evidence against Coke is compelling and creditable".

The extradition proceedings, which spanned a nine-month period and caused a diplomatic stand-off between Jamaica and the United States, triggered civil unrest in a section of Kingston, the Jamaican capital, in May.

More than 70 persons, including a soldier, were killed when the security forces went into Coke's heavily barricaded Tivoli Gardens stronghold in order to arrest him and to restore order after gunmen loyal to Coke had launched unprovoked attacks on police and soldiers.

Coke escaped during the May 24 operation but was captured on June 23. He waived his right to an extradition hearing and was flown to the US on June 24.

GUNMEN this morning barged into the Bijoux jewellery store — located next door to the police station in New Kingston — where they held several employees and customers hostage before making off with an undetermined some of cash and valuables.

The owner of the establishment declined to speak with representatives from the media about the incident, but one male worker told the Observer that the thugs disguised themselves as customers.

"Is about three of them come in, the man them all a look pon jewellery and were smelling cologne before they started," said the employee, noting that he stepped outside the establishment minutes before the robbery started to unfold.

According to him, the men brandished their guns and ordered employees and workers into a small room at the rear of the premises, robbing them of their cell phones and money.

They then opened the showcases and stole several watches and other items before fleeing in a waiting motorcar.

No one was injured, however.

The entire incident took about 20 minutes but the police, who are posted in a neighbouring building, had no knowledge of it.

Investigators are now observing closed-circuit television footage in an attempt to identify the bandits.

POLICE in the Corporate Area have, up to this morning, removed 16 youngsters from the streets in an operation targeting windshield wipers. The youngsters will be charged with road traffic breaches and other offences, said Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, head of the Police Traffic Division.

“We removed eight yesterday evening and we have removed eight more since this morning,” said Lewis.

Lewis said the youngsters will be processed before some are charged with road traffic breaches, and other offences.

"Right now we are heading into Three Miles. We also will be targeting other areas such as Papine and Cross Roads," Lewis continued, adding that the drive was ongoing.

In recent years, more and more windshield wipers have surfaced at major intersections in the city.

One youngster from Maxfield Avenue told the Observer that he has made more than $1,000 per day wiping windows.

The practice has, however, attracted criminal elements who abuse and rob motorists at traffic lights, posing a challenge to the police.

Washington (CNN) -- A filing on behalf of basketball superstar LeBron James dismisses as "rank speculation" claims by a Washington lawyer that he is the athlete's biological father, saying the man has "delusions" about alleged family ties.

Lawyers for James and his mother filed papers in federal court Monday seeking to dismiss a pending lawsuit. Leicester Stovell alleges the NBA all-star and his family have been involved in a cover-up to deny paternity, by committing fraud and misrepresentation.

The 14-page doc**ent said Stovell had completely failed to prove any of the facts alleged in his June 23 complaint. And they said he was motivated only by fame and money, calling Stovell's actions a "fanciful hope for celebrity."

The lawsuit claims Stovell met James' mother, Gloria, in a Washington bar and restaurant in 1984, when she was visiting from Ohio. She was 15 or 16 at the time, and Stovell says they had sex only once, and was informed by Gloria James months later that she was pregnant. He claims she told him the child would be named LeBron, similar to Leicester Bryce, Stovell's first and middle names.

Stovell is asking for unspecified millions of dollars in damages, and says he has been trying for three years to establish paternity, which he hopes would lead to financial and commercial opportunities. He is a solo legal practitioner in the District of Columbia, and filed the lawsuit on his own behalf.

He alleges a DNA test that showed he was not James' father was falsified.

James' attorneys, Frederick Nance and John Burlingame, dismissed those suggestions in often mocking tones aimed at the plaintiff.

"Stovell's claims for millions of dollars from his p***tive son and Gloria James are based upon rank speculation," said the court filing, "that a man who claims that as a 29-year-old lawyer he got a 15-year-old girl pregnant during a one-night stand and who never contributed a penny in child support would earn millions in commercial endors****ts by crawling out of the woodwork after the child he never gave a thought to became an NBA star."

James, a native of Akron, Ohio, recently left the Cleveland Cavaliers to sign with the Miami Heat for what is believed to be one of the richest sports contracts in history. He is the reigning most valuable player of the NBA, and has carefully cultivated a public image as one of the most popular and talented athletes.

The complaint filed June 23 by Stovell said, "I recently have concluded that a comprehensive, sophisticated and well-funded effort might well have been under way for quite some time, perhaps beginning in its present form as early as when defendant LeBron James was in high school, to frustrate identification of his real father, and that there is a likelihood that the father in question is me."

James' lawyers think otherwise. "Stovell may truly believe that he is the father of LeBron James, even though a DNA test has told him otherwise. But his delusions do not give rise to a cause of action against either Gloria or LeBron James."

Public records show Stovell is a former government attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He filed a lawsuit in 2002 against the agency, alleging racial discrimination. Federal court records show the case was settled when the SEC paid him $230,000, while not admitting fault.

Bounty Killer’s Range Rover & Land Cruiser Vehicles Seized By Tax Officials

Just over a month after Elephant Man’s convertible Benz motor car was seized by Jamaica’s Tax Administration Department (for alleged outstanding unpaid taxes), the ‘Grung Gaad’ Bounty Killer is now facing similar woes.

Earlier this morning, members of the Tax Administration Department’s Special Enforcement Team reportedly swooped down on Bounty Killer’s residence at the Oaklands complex on Constant Spring Road, and seized two of his vehicles – a Range Rover and a Land Cruiser. QUEENS (WABC) -- New information about the chilling video cops released of two suspects wanted in connection with a murder in Queens.

Cameras caught the gunfire as it erupted on 135th street and Liberty Avenue last month in the Richmond Hill section.

A 35-year-old man was killed.

One suspect tried to rob the victim in a Ford SUV.
A good samararitan witnessed the robbery, and tried to help.

The second suspect then runs over, and both men started to fire at the good samaritan.

The first gunman then shot and killed the driver in the SUV.

Both men are believed to be about 25 years old.

Further to our update yesterday about members of Vybz Kartel’s entourage being involved in an alleged brawl at an airport in the Bahamas earlier this week, the accused entourage members appeared in court yesterday, and more details have emerged.

Twenty-four-year-old Ainsley ‘Notnice’ Morris, 22-year-old André ‘Popcaan’ Sutherland and 26-year-old Lenburgh ‘Leng’ McDonald, all prominent members of Vybz Kartel’s Portmore Empire crew, appeared in court in the Bahamas yesterday, to answer to the charges of causing grievous harm and damage. The three were accused of attacking a Spirit Airlines pilot, after he reportedly tried to order a group of Kartel’s entourage (including several females) out of a male bathroom in the departure terminal of the Lynden Pindling International Airport.

The pilot was reportedly slapped  in the face and punched in his left eye, but allegedly retaliated by punching a member of the group, knocking him unconscious. He then ran out of the restroom and called for security, and although some of his alleged attackers were already on board the plane (awaiting departure) by the time he returned with security, the three were pointed out and taken off the plane.

Popcaan reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charges and was acquitted, while Notnice and Leng pleaded guilty to the charges of damage and grievous harm, and are expected to return to court this morning for sentencing.

Three members of Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer’s entourage were expected to appear in a Nassau, Bahamas court earlier today, to face charges of assault and damage after an alleged brawl at the Lyden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas on Monday, August 16.

Kartel and his entourage were reportedly at the airport awaiting departure, after he had performed at the weekend birthday event of Sebas Bastian, a Bahamian events promoter. The ink reads "rebelle fleur" which translates to "rebel flower" from French to English.

But, according to Popeater she screwed up:

 

"In French, adjectives typically follow the nouns they modify. To translate as "rebel flower," which we assume is what she intended, that tattoo should read "fleur rebelle."

Rihanna and Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, are reportedly in constant communication, but for the ‘Umbrella’ singer – who is dating baseball star Matt Kemp – their relationship is purely platonic.
